Abstract :

This study examines the relationship between traditional administrative systems and good governance in the Migili community of Nasarawa State, Nigeria. Using a documentary research method, the study reviewed conceptual, empirical, and theoretical literatures, alongside reports and archival documents over the years. The findings revealed that traditional authorities such as Zhekupo (Village Head) that is hereditary chief cabinet ministers or council of elders, and age-grade systems remain central to participatory decision-making, conflict resolution, and community development. However, challenges such as legal ambiguity, resource constraints, politicization, and exclusionary practices limit their effectiveness. Comparative global evidence suggests that integrating traditional systems with formal governance structures enhances accountability, transparency, and social cohesion. The study concludes that strengthening Migili’s traditional administration and fostering collaboration with formal institutions can promote sustainable development and good governance.
